James Chiew

James Chiew

James Chiew, from Singapore, living in the Netherlands, never trained as an artist, but thanks to his own talent and insight he grew into a photographer and art director. The James Chiew paintings stem from his love for photography and graphic design. In 2009 the true artist in him surfaced. Now James Chiew creates images and paintings that appeal to the imagination, thanks to the use of colours, shapes and texts.

As a graphic designer, James Chiew sees the world very differently. A James Chiew painting is an explosion of color and always evokes a special atmosphere, which then spreads over the room where the work hangs. James Chiew paintings can be very abstract, where colors overlap and seem to dance with each other. In addition, a James Chiew painting can be a kind of graphically designed collage, in which icons from pop culture and other subjects that appeal to the imagination.

Because James Chiew did not want to limit himself only to two-dimensional work, he also makes sculptures that appeal to the imagination. A James Chiew statue starts with an everyday object and ends as a work of art. An engine block or the shape of an apple can easily form the basis for a James Chiew statue. It remains important to look at what you really see, because James Chiew images always show the viewer something different thanks to colors, details and techniques used.
