Bio

In 1974 the first unsanctioned art exhibition was organised in Izmailovsky Park, Moscow, and Its participants were dispersed by using bulldozers. Around this time two types of culture movements, official and unofficial, were started in Moscow and Petersburg (known as Leninggrad at the time). The nonconformists started organising one-day exhibitions at private apartments and remote cultural centers. Starting 1978 part of these exhibitions was also Vladimirs Pavlovs (1950), an emerging artist from Latvia. Even though he wanted to exhibit his works in Riga, he considered himself to be a dissident. He also became a member of the Experimental Fine Arts group around 1978 (in Leningrad). The artist was born in Riga and graduated from the Arts Academy of Latvia, Artistic Construction department. In 1985 he joined the Artists Union of Latvia and, as the founding initiator of the Riga Artists Group, he wrote the Manifest of Free Art in 1989. Together with members of the group between 1991 and 1997 he organised exhibitions in several German cities. His works are part of private collections worldwide.
